Spontaneous Spinal Epidural Hematoma in a Patient With a Prosthetic Valve
Authors
Abstract:
Spontaneous Spinal Epidural Hematoma (SSEH) is a rare spinal condition. Early surgical intervention is generally indicated to prevent serious permanent neurological deficits. We encountered a case of spontaneous spinal epidural hematomas associated with motor weakness that was treated successfully by surgical evacuation.

Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma (SSEH) is a rare entity. We report a case of thoracolumbar SSEH in a 69 years-old woman, that occurred in 2005 without an etiologic factor to justify it. She recovered ad integrum after surgical decompressive treatment. We reviewed and discussed etiology, presentation, diagnostic approaches, and treatment.

A 26-year-old male who had no underlying disease, including coagulopathy, underwent thoracotomy and bleeding control due to hemothorax. On the fifth postoperative day, paralysis of both lower limbs occurred. Urgent spine magnetic resonance imaging showed a massive anterior spinal epidural hematoma from C2 to L1 level with different signal intensities, which was suspected to be staged hemorrhage...

Central nervous system hemorrhage is an uncommon and potentially devastating event in hemophiliacs, with an incidence of 2-8%.1 Intraspinal hematomas account for 8.5% of CNS hemorrhages in patients with factor VIII or IX deficiencies.2 Although most reported cases in this population are secondary to trauma, there are a few reports of spontaneous hemorrhage.3,4,5 We present a case of spontaneous...

The hemorrhagic side effects associated with the use of clopidogrel are within the acceptable range and occur mainly at skin or gastrointestinal sites. We report a case of spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma (SSEH) in a 60-yr-old woman who was treated with clopidogrel for frequent transient ischemic attacks. To our knowledge, this is the second reported case of clopidogrel-induced SSEH. The pa...
